Alga Norte Skatepark Overview

Like many San Diego Parks, this is a world-class facility frequented by pro-skaters and locals alike. Alga Norte Skatepark was built in 2014 by the park design and construction company, Stantec.

The park is located in Carlsbad’s Alga Norte Community Park, about 3.4 miles from the coast as the crow flies, in an upscale area of Carlsbad.

The skatepark is located at the edge of an open space area next to a small canyon. Its overall shape is roughly that of a boomerang.

At the end closest to the road are two large bowls, one a combi bowl with three round lobes and a square bowl.

Further from the road is a street plaza with features for skaters of all skill levels. There are some distinctive elements here including a quarter pipe with a multi-tier lip shaped to evoke the area’s Spanish-mission heritage.

The big quarter pipe serves as a barrier between the bowls and the street section, possibly intended to prevent any unsuspecting kiddies from wandering into the bowls.

Moving farther away from the bowls, there is a pump bump and a transitioned hip that are fun to mess around with in combination with the big quarter pipe. There is also an elongated fun box with various ledge and a series of wavey pump bumps next to it.

This section serves as a connector with the portion of the park farthest from the bowls, where the skatepark widens to include a higher tier with steps, hubbas, handrails, and banks.

In this video, Alga Norte is the second park I visit and give a tour of:

Once you’ve had your fill of this park-if that’s even possible-check out Encinitas Skatepark just a short drive away down the I-5.
